"Forty Mountain Flow" and "Goldilocks Falls" Off-Trail Adventure

With Adirondack Wilderness Explorers

Sat, Jun 19 • 10:00 AM

After a break that has extended for too long, it's time to go hiking! Let's explore this little-known area in the southern half of the Black River Wild Forest.

Never heard of Forty Mountain Flow or Goldilocks Falls? Can't find them on a map? Don't worry -- I made up the names to describe a cluster of interesting destinations in a region I love to visit when I don't have time to stray far from my home in the greater Utica area.

The itinerary for this day will begin by following an old logging road abandoned since the 1950s into the woods. Where the woods end, the off-trail adventure begins! This may be bushwhacking, but the open woods offer little resistance. We will head to Forty Mountain Flow, which is a large beaver pond nestled below a rocky hillside. We will cut over to Goldilocks Falls on Little Black Creek, so named because... well, it'll make sense when you get there. Maybe we'll even come across "Hotel Rock," a boulder that creates a small, natural shelter.

By the time the day is over, you'll be one of an incredibly small number of people who have explored this almost unknown wilderness!
