I have lots of favorite places in the Adirondacks, but Whitney Lake was one of my first loves. A recent day hike to the campsites on the east shore reminded me that I've been away for too long, and I've tucked this outing away for the height of fall. And since it's been a long time... too long!... since I've offered an outing, well who wants to join me for a weekend backpacking trip?
Whitney is located near Pillsbury Mountain in the West Canada Lake Wilderness. It is located 5.2 miles from the trailhead along well-defined trails (although the last 1.9 miles are not marked). There are two campsites on the lake's east shore, but we will seek out the northern one, which is larger and more suitable for group camping. Hopefully the foliage will be colorful, the days sunny, and the night star-filled and cool.
Note that I said these trails are "well-defined" but not "well-maintained." The 2019 Halloween rainstorm gullied the main trail, and a wet July 2023 made the rest of the area quite soggy. Log bridges have washed out, and new beaver flooding have forced detours of dubious quality. With a sense of adventure the way is passable, but be sure to pack a change in socks.
If you are looking to reconnect, join Bella and me for this fall outing!

Meeting Location: This information will be sent to trip participants via email. Please ensure your settings allow event-related emails.
Risk Statement: While we never deliberately court dangerous situations, the exploration of wilderness areas implies personal risk, such as being injured in a remote area. By participating in any Adirondack Wilderness Explorer event, you agree to assume full responsibility for the personal safety and well being of yourself and your guests.
Seasonal Conditions: September can be exceptionally beautiful, with the change in foliage, crisp days, and lack of bugs. But the days are getting shorter, and the weather is noticeably cooler. When it rains, hypothermia is a real threat.
