Blue Ledge is a famous destination deep within the Hudson Gorge, depicted by the nineteenth-century artist Winslow Homer in several watercolor paintings made during the height of the log river driving era. Today the cliffs shades a bend in the river frequented by whitewater rafters and hikers throughout the summer. In the fall, those who visit this remote portion of New York's biggest river are likely to have it to themselves.
Join me for a weekend expedition into the Hudson Gorge Wilderness, camping at a spacious site just downstream from the Blue Ledge cliffs. Although it would be silly to expect much warmth in mid-November, there is nevertheless a nearby beach where relaxing seems mandatory, and many good views of the river. Time and interest permitting, we can enjoy a side trip to a nearby area where tributary streams disappear into underground caves, and engage in a lively debate whether this is the real site named "Virgin Falls."
If you're looking for a mid-fall weekend getaway, come and join us in the Hudson Gorge!
